August 4, 2011

Familiar faces returned for the Invitational

Although the temperatures didn’t quite reach triple digits as in 2010, the mixed doubles team of Heather Sweeney and Jake Wilson was more than happy to take the victory plunge into the Apawamis Club pool July 9. The duo won the eighth annual Alana Dupont Invitational tournament, with over 50 friends, family, and club members on hand for the always-enjoyable affair.

Matt Casey and Dana Pike delivered an all-time classic finale at the Apawamis Club Men’s Championship September 5, ultimately needing a one-hole playoff to determine a winner. In the end it was Casey who pulled out the victory, scoring par on the 37th and final hole to secure his sixth club championship.

The semifinals were not without drama either, as Pike eked out a 1-up victory over his eight-time champion older brother, Tod, to advance to the championship round.

Who Says Practice Makes Perfect?

Lisa Murphy

After letting her clubs collect dust for two years, Lisa “Ace” Murphy decided to lace up the old golf shoes and hit the links at Apawamis Club earlier this month. The rust on her game was noticeable through the first nine (she shot a 58), but Murphy was determined to turn it around. So she kicked off her shoes and finished the course barefoot.

The new strategy paid off and then some, as Murphy bagged her first-ever hole-in-one on the 175-yard par three 16th hole. All in all she improved her score by 15 strokes on the back nine, and everyone at the club celebrated afterwards by having a drink on “Ace”.
