Brothers in Clubs: The Gladstone Boys

May 23, 2011

It’s an annual tradition for the Rye boys’ golf team. In the final practice of the season, the top players choose sides to compete in a scramble contest. Co-captain Andrew Gladstone, a junior, could have picked anyone on the talented Garnets’ roster, but ended up selecting a 7th grader – his younger brother, William.

It was the right choice.

Chabot Earns Lions Club Distinction

May 23, 2011

Maddy Chabot, a senior captain on the girls’ lacrosse team, was honored with the Lions Club Athlete of the Month award for April.

Chabot joined the JV squad back in 2006, and was named the team’s MVP. Her ascension to the top of the program continued with varsity. The starting midfielder was named to the All-Elite team in 2010, and she also received the Coaches Award. One of just four seniors on this year’s team, Chabot will likely be a major reason for Rye’s success if they advance in the Section playoffs.

It was just another day at the park for the Rye Neck softball team and pitcher Jessica Calvini May 11 at Port Chester. The Panthers defeated the Rams 15-0 on the strength of five near-flawless innings from their ace.

Jessica Calvini pitched another gem.

As always, Calvini was stellar both on the mound and at the plate. The junior struck out 10 batters and recorded more hits than she allowed, going 3-for-4 with a home run and six RBIs while giving up just two singles.

Leave it up to Rye Country Day and Holy Child to play a golf match that comes down to the final hole. The local rivals did just that May 11 at Westchester Country Club, as RCDS freshman Summer Kitahara – the No. 5 player – sank a shot on the 9th hole to give the Wildcats a 3-2 victory.

Katie Cole

Rye Country Day hasn’t missed a step this season with new head coach Marie Vlcek at the helm. They’re 9-2-1 and prepared to go for a three-peat at the Fairchester Athletic Association championship May 23. Junior captain Katie Cole and senior captain Lauren Schumaker have led the way, with sophomore Skye McCaine and junior Taryn Clary providing support in the top five.

Garnets Implode Against Nyack; Hope to Rebound in Time for Playoffs

May 23, 2011

With five games between May 9 and 14, the Rye baseball team was eager to pad their 8-2 record en route to the Section playoffs. Unfortunately, after winning the first two contests, they dropped the last three including a 7-5 heartbreaker against Nyack May 12.

Jeff Dempsey

Up 2-1 and an out away from victory, Kevin Turco was ready to finish the Indians – who had a man on third – off in the seventh inning. An unfortunate error allowed Nyack to tie the game, however, and the visitors capitalized in extra innings.

Chloe Giordano

Three Gryphons – Chloe Giordano, Noelle Grieco, and Lauren Manzino – accounted for six of Holy Child’s nine hits. Kim McKoy had two hits for the Wildcats.

Rye took Zweigenhaft’s message to heart, and defeated the Indians 15-8.
