Indian Village Hoopsters Compete in Holiday Bash

January 7, 2010

Twenty Indian Village men dusted off their basketball skills December 20 at the YMCA for a neighborly holiday clash. Before the participants were able to even lace up their sneakers, however, they had to shovel out from the blizzard that touched down in Rye the night before.

The contest – featuring the Blue team coached by David Meister and the White squad directed by Peter Norton – was highlighted by strong defense from both sides. In the end, Doug Worman’s nifty point guard play lifted the boys in Blue over the White team, 30-28. He led his men with 12 points and Bob Petersen chipped in seven, including a pair on a “shake and bake” driving layup.

Crafty veteran Mal Durkee was at the helm of the White team from the point. Mike Dinger paced the team with eight points. The speedy player also displayed his hops by going sky-high for a highlight reel tip-in (so who says a White guy can’t jump?).

Mike Curran showed off his silky smooth jumper all day, and finished with seven points while Neil Bresolin, a hockey dad from Canada, scored his first two points in a basketball game ever. Chris Murphy – playing opposite his father, Paul – showed no respect by outscoring Pops two baskets to one. Hunter Baldwin hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer that left the White team just short.

“It was considered a win for all that no one got hurt,” said Paul Murphy jokingly. “Much thanks to David Ahl and Paul Knight for working the book and the scoreboard.”
