Autumn and Optimism Go Hand in Hand for Wildcats

Rye Country Day School has been home to an astounding run of success in recent years, and it appears the plot of the story won’t be changing any time soon.

Whoever said death and taxes are the only certainties in life has clearly never watched the Rye Country Day field hockey team. The perennial contenders won their second NYSAIS championship in three years last November by defeating Riverdale 1-0. It was the Wildcats’ fourth straight appearance in the State finals, and head coach Georgette Summers’ squad is already preparing for a fifth visit.

“We will miss the graduating seniors, their spirit and experience, but the energy and focus on the field has not changed,” said Summers. “The girls came back ready to work. Our seniors will continue the legacy of hard work and commitment, and I believe they can fill the void.”


Rye Country Day Fall Sports Preview

The hunger for success is fierce at Rye Country Day, and each of the school’s six fall season teams has the talent to transform that appetite into postseason glory.


In a sport where experience is the name of the game, Rye Country Day went to battle with just four seniors in 2008 and finished 4-5. But head coach John Calandros believes the program will reap benefits from that trial by fire now.

“This season really started with the juniors last year,” said Calandros. “A lot of them gained their first varsity experience then, and their maturity, confidence, and knowledge are far superior now than they were this time last year.”
