The Rye girls’ golf team had a spectacular season, finishing 13-0 and sending the entire team — an unprecedented half-dozen players — to the first round of the Sectional tournament. Junior Jen Lee, freshman Alexis Hios, seniors Nancy Kelleher, Julia Pasqualini, and Kelly McRedmond, and eighth grader Frida Henningsson all teed off at Beekman Country Club.
Head coach Rich Savage was hoping each girl would play to the best of her ability and make it to the Section finals, held June 7 at Miniscongo Golf Club. He and the team could not have been happier when every player made it. What’s more, Jen Lee — runner-up in 2010 — won the Section 1 title with a score of 161, “an amazing accomplishment for a junior,” Savage noted.
Hios came in second in the Section with a score of 171. Henningsson tied for 5th at 189 and senior co-captain Nancy Kelleher (196) won the playoff hole to finish as an alternate. “We had a great day!” said the coach.
The State tournament was held June 11-12 at SUNY-Delhi, a par-72 course. Lee’s goal was a top-20 finish, which would earn her All-State honors. She got off to a slow start on day one, lagging behind Hios by a stroke, while Henningsson shot a 99. Lee rallied on day two, scoring a 76 to finish 17th, 15 shots behind the winner. Hios logged an impressive final card of 171, which placed her 31st, and Henningsson easily bettered her first day’s score, by 10 strokes, for a total of 188. Lee and Hios finished 1-2 for the Sectional team, leading them to fifth place in the State.
“Four years ago we started this program with only two wins, and now our entire team makes the Sectional tournament finals,” said Savage. “It was truly magical!”
