Wildcats Edge Gryphons in WCC Thriller

Leave it up to Rye Country Day and Holy Child to play a golf match that comes down to the final hole. The local rivals did just that May 11 at Westchester Country Club, as RCDS freshman Summer Kitahara – the No. 5 player – sank a shot on the 9th hole to give the Wildcats a 3-2 victory.

Katie Cole

Rye Country Day hasn’t missed a step this season with new head coach Marie Vlcek at the helm. They’re 9-2-1 and prepared to go for a three-peat at the Fairchester Athletic Association championship May 23. Junior captain Katie Cole and senior captain Lauren Schumaker have led the way, with sophomore Skye McCaine and junior Taryn Clary providing support in the top five.

Despite a 4-6 record, the Gryphons and head coach Mike Duignan are proud of the way they have performed this season.

“The match with Rye Country Day is typical of the way we have played this year,” said Duignan. “Our team motto is ‘Too Legit To Quit’, and several of our matches have come down to the final hole. We never beat ourselves. We make our opponents work.”

Christina Bryde

Holy Child’s standout captains are Christina Bryde and Kristen Hudson. Paige Kennedy and Charlotte Knobloch are top players as well, and two of a team-record 27 golfers on the roster.
