Four runs in the bottom of the fourth propelled Holy Child to a 5-2 victory over rival Rye Country Day May 6 at Gryphon Field. Junior pitcher Kathleen Samuelson pitched seven innings and struck out five in the victory.
Three Gryphons – Chloe Giordano, Noelle Grieco, and Lauren Manzino – accounted for six of Holy Child’s nine hits. Kim McKoy had two hits for the Wildcats.
“We hit well, we fielded the way we are capable of, and we got the job done,” said HC head coach Jen Cirillo. “Rye Country Day is young, but talented. Their shortstop made some fantastic plays during the game. Give them a year or two and they are going to be amazing.”
The Gryphons followed the rivalry win with a 9-3 defeat of Convent of the Sacred Heart. Emily Corelli hit two doubles and recorded three RBIs, and Samuelson hit a bases-clearing, three-run double.
The NYSAIS playoffs begin this weekend, and the FAA tournament starts May 23.
