Garnets Push Off With Success in Mind

The Rye crew team kicked off the spring racing season April 9 by rowing the Mianus River at the NYPPEX Greenwich Invitational. The conditions were near perfect – a beautiful clear sky above, calm winds blowing through, and flat water to ride. Multiple Rye boats competed, reflecting a healthy roster of athletes, among them many freshmen who joined after crew was designated a varsity sport last fall. The team posted competitive times while working out the kinks of rowing in new boat lineups.

A week later, the Garnets competed in the Mercer Lake/ISA Sculling Regatta in New Jersey. It was a totally different day weather wise – gray, cold, and with high winds that caused several boats to capsize. Despite the conditions, both the Women’s Novice 8+ and the Men’s Novice 8+ placed third in their races.

The Garnets work well as a team.

Upcoming regattas include overnight trips to Saratoga and Philadelphia. Head coaches Stan Nelson and Jennifer Palermo are confident the team will continue to improve as the season progresses and more time is spent on the water.
