Garnet Golfers Having Seasons to Remember

Rye’s golf teams are tearing through the spring schedule. The boys’ and girls’ seasons intersected at Rye Golf Club April 27, and each Garnet squad sent their opponents packing in convincing fashion.

One day after besting Harrison 240-381, the girls defeated Byram Hills 250-283 and improved to 5-0. The contest began with a last-minute shuffle when Kelly McRedmond and Caroline Whelan were forced to withdraw because of a time conflict with that night’s scholar dinner. Head coach Rich Savage and the team took this little crisis in stride and marched on.

Jen Lee led the way with a 45, while Frida Henningssen and Alexis Hios each shot a 49. Nancy Kelleher (50) and Julia Pasqualini (57) rounded out the top five for Rye. The highlight of the day was Pasqualini’s birdie on the par-5 second hole.

“That really helped us refocus and gave the whole team a burst of energy,” said Kelleher, a senior co-captain, of the birdie.

Meanwhile, on the boys’ side, Andrew Gladstone spearheaded Rye’s winning effort against Tappan Zee. The junior shot a 37 on the par 36 course as the Garnets defeated the visitors 211-231.

Gladstone’s score was just more of the same brilliance displayed so far. He shot a 36 at Mount Kisco April 25, and a 38 at Brynwood against Keio 24 hours later. Earlier in the season, versus rival Harrison at Old Oaks, he registered a 35.

Sophomore Henry Bailey and James McHugh, a seventh grader, each shot a 42 against Tappan Zee. Sophomores Thomas Henderson, Joey Viger, and Jabril Whiteside all tallied 45’s.

“As you can see we are young and having a good season,” said head coach Pat Romano. “I am excited about the remainder of this season and the next couple of years.”

The Garnets, now 6-2, hosts the Huskies May 10 at Rye Golf Club.
