Garnets Look Good Off the Tee in the Early Going

The girls’ golf team is off to a great start and on their way to retaining their League championship crown. Although rain postponed their match against Scarsdale, they thumped two rivals decisively at home in early April.

The Garnets easily defeated Edgemont 245-325 April 7, and followed it up a week later with an even easier win, 245-345, over Mamaroneck, as junior Jen Lee led the team with a 46. Freshman Alexis Hios was right behind with a 48, and eighth-grader Frida Hennigsson (49) also broke 50.

Other Garnet scorers: junior Kelly McRedmond, 50; senior co-Captain Nancy Kelleher, 52; junior Caroline Whelan, 63.

Head coach Rich Savage pronounced himself pleased with his team’s performance, but reminded the girls it’s early in the season. Rye has 12 matches yet to play, only four of which are on their home course.

After spring break, they’ll play three contests in as many days, starting April 25, against Woodlands, Harrison, and Byram Hills. They continue their grueling three-matches-a-week schedule through the end of the season in late May.
