Former Garnet Experiences the Madness of March

Caroline Feeley, a 2008 graduate of Rye High School, was part of Marist College’s second-straight run to the 2011 NCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball Tournament last month. Marist, a No. 10 seed, upset No. 7 Iowa State 74-64 in the first round, but fell to No. 2 Duke in the round of 32. The Red Foxes entered March Madness on a 26-game winning streak, and captured their sixth consecutive Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference championship along the way.

Caroline Feeley on the defensive

Feeley, a junior psychology major, originally made the team as a walk-on during her sophomore year. She was named to the MAAC All-Academic Team this season, and said the tourney experience was “awesome, unreal, and lots of fun.” Although the point guard’s playing time was limited, she was proud of her team’s performance throughout the year. They played teams like Louisville, Villanova, and Nebraska, and traveled to states including Nevada, North Carolina, and Kansas. At one point the Red Foxes were ranked No. 17 nationally.

Some of the current Garnets showed their appreciation for Rye’s former All-Section star by cheering Feeley on when Iona hosted the Red Foxes in February.
