Wildcats Finish in Top Third of Teams at Prep Championships

The Rye Country Day wrestling team wrapped up a strong season in the New York State Prep Championships at Long Island Lutheran February 12, placing fifth out of 15 squads. Plagued by injuries causing all but two upper classmen to miss matches, the Wildcats came together for one of their best performances of the year.

Senior captains Michael Rosenfeld and Brandon Kim finished their wrestling careers on high notes when they placed second and third in their respective weight classes. Unable to repeat as State champion, junior Chibueze Nwakeze finished second and will be on the warpath in 2012 when he seeks to reclaim the title.

Junior Ben Lust, previously named to the FAA All-League First Team, finished fourth in his class. Sophomore John Almodovar also placed fourth. Kim pointed out that Almodovar is beginning to make a name for himself in the 103-pound class.

The Wildcats will have plenty to look forward to next season, as they return ten juniors and a strong sophomore class. Rosenfeld said it’s useless to single out a wrestler to watch next season, claiming that, “They will all have good years.”

Although wrestlers like Lust and Nwakeze will have another crack at winning a State championship, the State tourney signaled the end of the road for Rosenfeld and Kim at RCDS.

“We wrestle because we love the elation of pinning someone and knowing that you walked out the better man,” said Kim. “There is no tying or middle ground, just a world that purely exists in winning and losing.”
