The Rye Country Day and Holy Child field hockey teams may not have hoisted postseason hardware, but each made valiant run to the championship game.
For the seventh-straight year, the fourth-seeded Gryphons qualified for the NYSAIS tournament, making it all the way to the State title game before falling to No. 3 Nichols, 4-0. Bridget Cooney stopped 14 shots in the loss.
While RCDS (13-4-1) were bounced in the semifinals of the same NYSAIS tourney courtesy of Nichols, they rebounded in the FAA tournament. The Wildcats scratched and clawed their way to the title game, but were overwhelmed 7-0 by a Greenwich Academy team that, according to head coach Georgette Summers, plays “on another level”.
“This team is a success story,” said senior captain Amanda Shulman. “We graduated nine seniors last year, but we stepped up and I believe made for the strongest team RCDS has had in recent years.”
