Garnets Send Six to State Championships

The Rye girls’ swimming and diving team has put together another banner season. They finished first in their Conference and also at Divisionals, and followed those accomplishments with a hard-fought third-place effort at the Section 1 meet earlier this month.

Now it’s on to the State championships this weekend in Buffalo. Rye is sending six of their best to the competition – Melissa Fulenwider, Courtney Ciardiello, Kelly O’Neill, Shannon Toal, Katie Konopka, and Coco Darelius.

Fulenwider, O’Neill, Ciardiello, and Toal qualified for States in the 200-yard medley relay after winning the Section championship in a time of 1:49.92. The first three are also teaming with Konopka to race in the 400-meter freestyle relay, another race they won at Sectionals (3:37.86).

Ciardiello, a senior, qualified for States in two additional races. She won the 100-meter butterfly with a clocking of 56.89, and then placed second in the 100-meter backstroke with a time (58.54) good enough for States. Fulenwider, a sophomore who’s been swimming for Rye since the seventh grade, will also appear in two solo events in Buffalo. Both her third-place finish in the 100-meter free (53.61) and fourth-place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:06.24) did the trick.

Darelius, Rye’s premier diver, rounds out the State finalists after a qualifying performance at Sectionals.

“We are so proud of all the girls this season,” said head coach Shannon Bolger. “There have been so many exceptional meets, swims, and dives. We are looking forward to the State competition to see how well our qualifiers can do.”
