Jonah Shainberg, a freshman at Rye High School, who has been fencing competitively since age 8, won medals in two events at the annual U.S. Fencing Association National Championships in Atlanta this summer. He placed seventh out of 131 competitors in the Youth 14 Men’s Sabre, and eighth out of 115 in Cadet Men’s Sabre (age 16 and under).
The 14-year-old finished the 2009-10 USFA season ranked No. 4 in the nation in Youth 14 Men’s Sabre, but – as a result of his strong performance at Nationals – he began the new season ranked first in the country. Over the next year, he will compete in London, Dallas, Milwaukee, Reno, and Portland, as well as in local and regional events.
Shainberg trains at the Fencing Academy of Westchester in Hawthorne with coach Archil “Achiko” Lortkipanidze.
