Garnets Win Eight Events, Defeat Rival Huskies

It was business as usual for the Rye girls’ swimming and diving team in their season-opener September 20 against arch-rival Harrison. The Garnets picked up where they left off from last year’s undefeated campaign and defeated the Huskies 50-42 at Louis M. Klein Middle School.

Rye's senior captains

Rye swimmers placed first in eight of the 11 events, beginning with Kelly O’Neill, Dana Egan, Chiharu Takei, and Melissa Fulenwider’s 2:02.93 finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Katie Konopka followed that performance with a first place swim in the 200 freestyle (2:01.07), while O’Neill, a senior captain, gave Rye a three-for-three start with her 2:20.37 victory in the 200 IM. Both Konopka’s and O’Neill’s times were good enough to qualify for Sectionals later this season.

Harrison made the meet interesting by winning the next three events – the 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly, and 100 freestyle – but Rye rebounded to sweep the remaining races. Senior captain Shannon Toal swam to victory and punched a ticket to Sectionals in the 500 freestyle by clocking in at 5:31.73, and then Rye’s Konopka, Lena Krikorian, Catherine Tompkins, and Fulenwider won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:51.94. In the next race, the 100 backstroke, O’Neill touched first in a time of 1:05.47.

Fulenwider was the Garnets’ fourth competitor to qualify for Sectionals. She zoomed to a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.77). Rye’s 400 freestyle relay team – consisting of Egan, the third senior captain, Krikorian, Kelly Delane, and Camilia Perez-Segnini – rounded out Rye’s shining day with a winning time of 4:07.18.

Kelly O'Neill

“The girls swam exceptionally well and this meet sets the bar for great things to come,” said an excited Shannon Bolger, the head coach.

O’Neill agreed, adding, “It was a great start to the season and all of the girls swam really well. Everyone was supportive and cheered each other on. We are very excited to see what we can accomplish as a team.”

Rye’s next meet is September 27 versus Byram Hills at SUNY Purchase.
