Rye Swimmers and Divers Strike Gold at County, Conference Championships

The 85th annual Westchester County Swimming and Diving Championships went off without a hitch from late July through early August, as 39 teams competed in the diving portion at Sprain Ridge Pool and the swimming events at Playland Pool. Lake Isle raced to first place for the sixth year in a row, but Rye Golf Club and Coveleigh Club impressed with respective fourth- and fifth-place finishes.

At the Conference Championships, which ran August 6-12 at Westchester Country Club, the host team came in first. Rye Golf placed fourth, while Coveleigh and Shenorock finished ninth and 10th respectively.

Many Rye swimmers stood out in both competitions. Liam Egan, a 12-year-old who swims for Orienta Beach Club, won four gold medals at the Counties. Egan, also a Badger Swim Club member, set new records in the 12 & under 50-yard butterfly and 50-yard freestyle. He placed first overall in the 11-12 boys’ division, with 36 points.

“I felt really good out there and it’s so cool that I set new records, especially because I broke the records set ten years ago by the same swimmer, Ryan Emanuel. I trained very hard and stayed focused in the pool.”

Egan also broke the record for the 50-yard freestyle at the Conference Championships, and struck gold in 50-yard butterfly and backstroke events.

American Yacht Club’s Melissa Fulenwider, a star on Rye High’s swim team, came out on top of the girls’ 15-17 bracket at Counties with 28 points. Fulenwider won gold in the 100-yard breaststroke and freestyle, and the 200-yard individual medley. She added one more gold to her summer haul by winning the 100-yard breaststroke at the Conference event.

Rounding out Rye’s gold medal winners at Counties were Rye Golf’s Tessa Garces (12 & under 50-yard butterfly), and Coveleigh’s Isabel Shipman (14 & under 100-yard freestyle). Garces also won bronze in the butterfly at Conferences, in addition to a silver in the backstroke. Shipman took home a silver in the same freestyle event. Raoul Rodriguez followed up a pair of bronze wins (100-yard backstroke and butterfly) for AYC at Counties with a silver medal grab at WCC in the 14 & under backstroke. Kelly O’Neill won bronze as well in the 100-yard freestyle at Counties.

Chiharu Takei was a big winner for Rye Golf at Conferences, racing to first in the girls’ 14 & under 100-yard butterfly. Spencer Lafata won bronze for Coveleigh in the 12 & under 50-yard butterfly, and Rye Golf’s Connor Popp placed second in both the 8 & under 25-yard breaststroke and butterfly.

Rye divers also made a splash. Coco Darelius, the 16-year-old sensation for Rye Golf, delivered a golden dive in the girls’ 14-17 1-meter at Counties. Shenorock’s Maddy Kenney and Rye Golf’s Julia MacLaury, both 12, took gold and silver respectively in the girls’ 10-13 1-meter diving event.

At the Conference championships, Weschester Country Club’s Carolina Sculti set a new diving record in the 10 & under bracket with 120.4 points. Jack Goffinet finished first for Coveleigh in the boys’ 10 & under competition, and Gabe Girotto (RGC) won the 13 & under division. In the 17 & under portion, Darelius placed second and Jack O’Brien finished third among the boys. Kenney and MacLaury followed up strong County performances with respective third and fifth place finishes in the 13 & under category.
