Garnet Greats Get Together for Lacrosse Alumni Game

Despite a field temperature close to 100 degrees – so hot the heat shimmered in waves off the Nugent Stadium turf – the Rye Lacrosse Alumni Game went off without a hitch on a Sunday in late June. Nearly 30 former Garnets came out for the first such contest in three decades, with teams separated by year of graduation. Alumni from odd years donned red uniforms, while evens wore black.

John Wood, Tom Buttrick and Stephen Collins were teammates in the 70s and 1977 RHS graduates.

Most of the participants graduated within the last 10 years, but the game did feature three graybeards from the class of 1977, including Detective John Wood, and one apiece from ’80, ’81 and ’84.

It’s a battle of the 1980s as Andy Ball defends Phil DeCaro.

In the end the Red team eked out a 9-8 overtime victory against their Black counterparts, but the nail-biting finish did not prevent the foes-for-a-day from getting together for a terrific postgame tailgate. The event, which the Rye Lacrosse Association hopes to turn into an annual affair, was organized by George McReddie.
