Field of 280 Set to Swim Across the Sound

Eager swimmers and cheering crowds will gather Saturday, August 7 for the 23rd Annual St. Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound Marathon fundraiser. Accompanied by a fleet of 110 boats, they’ll dive in at Danford’s Marina in Port Jefferson at 8:30 a.m. for the 15.5 mile journey across the Sound to Captain’s Cove Seaport in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

This year 10 solo swimmers, 45 relay teams of four to six swimmers and two two-person will take to the water, including five teams entered in the new University Challenge category. The fastest swimmers are expected to start to cross the finish line at approximately 2:30 p.m., depending on the weather.

The Marathon started in 1987 when Jeffrey Keith, who had lost part of his leg to cancer, swam across the Sound with friend Matthew Vossler and raised $5,000 for St. Vincent’s Medical Center Foundation. Since then the Marathon has grown into a year-long series of events, which has raised millions, $2.65 million in 2009 alone.
