Rye Rallies in Postseason

Over the past several years, Rye High School Boys Tennis has been on a roll, winning conference and sectional titles and advancing in the New York State High School Championships. This year, with a new generation of players, the momentum has continued as Keishi Goto and Grant DeBease paired up for doubles in the postseason.

Although they played singles in league matches, with Goto at No. 1 and DeBease at No. 3, doubles is not unfamiliar to the duo and both felt up to the challenge. The two advanced through the Conference III Tournament at Harrison High School, May 19-21, defeating teams from Blind Brook, Harrison, John Jay and Horace Greeley. In two matches, they narrowly edged out their opponents with tiebreak finishes.

Winning four out of five matches put DeBease and Goto on the court at Anthony Veteran Town Park in Ardsley for the Section One Championships. There they put up a strong showing against the No. 1 seeds Jake Gorobetz and David Goldberg of Scarsdale, but fell 6-2, 7-5.

Rye coach Sue Dickson said, “Grant and Keishi did compete well against a team that went to states last year. They earned the respect of the coaches from other schools and conducted themselves well.” After defeating Rye, Scarsdale ended up as sectional finalists and qualified for States.

In the regular season, the Garnets accomplished a 5-6 record, which included both league and non-league matches. Rye High moved up a notch this year, competing in the A league, the strongest of the three leagues in Conference III.

In non-league matches, the Garnets achieved some unprecedented wins over Rye Country Day. In the league, they defeated Keio Academy, a long-time rival, 4-3, both home and away.

Team newcomers Harrison Janart, Alfredo Holguin, Phil Dorn, Will Friedman and Harry Bonay were welcome additions. Seasoned members Buck Reynolds, who played No. 2 singles, and Jun Tsuboike, at No. 2 doubles, will assume active roles next year with six Garnets graduating — Peter DeBartolo, Erik Morque, Gunther Kempin, Ryan Cavataro, Chris Murphy and Dylan Hammer.
