Garnets Fall in Sectional Outbracket Game

The conclusion of the Rye softball team’s season in the outbracket round of the Class A Section playoffs May 27 also spelled the end of an era for the Garnets. Rye will graduate six of the program’s stalwarts later this month – Samantha Lee, Karly FitzGerald, Amy Shanks, Killian Harris, Lizzy Neeves and Christa Tripodi.

“I would like to thank them for all of their efforts over the past few years,” said head coach Alex Tejera of the players who have been building blocks for his program. “I wish them lots of luck in the future. They will all be missed.”

Rye’s first playoff game was unfortunately their final one, as the 16th-seeded hosts dropped a 17-5 decision to No. 17 Nyack. The Garnets quickly fell behind 9-0 heading into the bottom of the second, and could not scratch a run across until the fourth.

Sophomore pitcher Erica Becker proved her mettle in the top of the third inning after getting hit by a laser beam comebacker on the left shoulder. She toughed it out, finishing both the inning and the game. The Garnets will undoubtedly rely on her gritty play in coming seasons.

Kristen Verille, also a sophomore, provided another flash of future hope when she hammered a two-run double in the fourth inning. Shanks, Harris and junior Nina Grau each recorded an RBI as well. Unfortunately, the Garnets were in too big a hole and for every run they scored, Nyack answered back to retain control.

“It was a tough game, but I was proud of the girls,” said Tejera. “They hung in there and tried their best. They never gave up and fought until the last out. As a coach that’s all that you can ask. Our goal at the beginning of the season was to make the Sectionals and we did that. Obviously we didn’t go as far as we wanted to, but at least we made it to the postseason.”
