Samantha Lee Earns Lions Club Athlete of the Month Distinction

Softball stalwart Samantha Lee was recently selected as May’s Lions Club Athlete of the Month.

“The award is an incredible honor that was completely unexpected,” said Lee. “Thank you to all who were involved in the selection process and I am glad that I can help softball gain its deserved recognition for the improvement of the program.”

Lee has starred for the Garnets since 2005, and was tabbed captain for the 2010 season. Although Rye’s season ended in an outbracket Section playoff game, the second baseman delivered the goods time and again during her career. She was named All-League in both 2008 and 2009, and will likely receive the same honor this year when the lists are announced.

The senior has long been a force for Rye’s volleyball team as well. A captain in 2009, Lee was the team’s starting setter and earned All-League distinction for a third consecutive year.

In the last 12 months alone Lee has received numerous academic honors, including the Con Edison Westchester Scholastic Sports Award, National Merit Letter of Commendation, Yale University Book Award, and awards for Orchestra, AP Biology, Pre-Calculus/AP Calculus, National Music Honor Society and National Honor Society. Lee is also an AP Scholar with Honors who – beginning in 2007 – designed an experiment and conducted individual research at the Maritime Aquarium involving self-recognition in North American river otters. She has received credit at SUNY Albany as well, for advanced science research.

Lee plays the violin, participating in both the school orchestra and RHS string quartet. She is a member of the Curriculum Council, Awards Assembly Committee and Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse (VAASA), and is also the Class of 2010 Treasurer.

Lee will attend Yale University next fall and, although they do not have a softball club team, she plans to continue playing at the intramural level.
