Boys Advance to Semifinals; Girls Fall at Nyack

The sixth-seeded Rye boys’ lacrosse team defeated No. 3 Pelham 9-5 on the road yesterday in the Class C quarterfinals. The Garnets jumped out to a 6-1 lead by halftime, and extended the lead to 9-1 entering the third. Although the Pelican made things interesting with four unanswered goals in the fourth, Rye held on to advance to the semifinals where they will face second-seeded Bronxville on the road Thursday at 4:30.

Against Pelham, junior captain Matt McReddie led with three goals, while senior captain Cole McCormack and junior Briggs Barton scored two apiece. Mike Linehan, also a senior captain, dominated early and often for the Garnets. He made 10 saves, many in dramatic fashion in the early goings as dirt from Pelham’s natural field kicked up and created a cloud of dust around him.

On the girls’ side, their season unfortunately came to an end in the Class C semifinals against No. 2 Nyack, the team who defeated them in the Section championship last year. Nyack ousted Rye 8-6 this time, as the 11th-seeded Garnets fought valiantly to the end, cutting a three-goal defecit to 7-6 before the second-seeded favorite pulled away.

In today’s action, the top-seeded Rye Country Day boys’ lacrosse team will battle for the NYSAIS State championship with Hackley at Randall’s Island at 3 p.m.
