Garnets Qualify for Sectionals; Swept by Rival Harrison

The Rye girls’ softball team will be back in the Section playoffs for a third consecutive year after finishing in second place with a 4-2 league record. The playoffs begin the final week of May, after the Garnets (6-10 overall) wrap up the regular season May 21 at Ardsley.

In recent action, Rye was swept by a talented Harrison squad in a home-and-home set May 11 and 13. After losing 14-0 in game one at home, the Garnets hoped to redeem themselves on the road. Although Rye got off to a great start in the top of the first with a two-run single from catcher Killian Harris, the Huskies immediately responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. The game remained close until the bottom of the fourth, when Harrison broke it open with a 10-run, two-out rally en route to a 16-3 victory.

“We played well for the first part of the game and then had one bad inning that took us out of it,” said head coach Alex Tejera. “They are a very good team and you can’t give them extra chances because they will take advantage of them. I thought our girls played hard and fought until the end – we just made a few crucial mistakes.”

Co-captain Samantha Lee seconded her coach’s thoughts.

Meghan Gormley

“We knew Harrison was going to be tough and to win we would have to limit our errors and come ready to play,” said the senior. “In both games we had one really rough inning in which we gave up a lot of runs. We are fortunately qualified for Sectionals so we are now looking to better our record for a higher seed.”
