Positive Vibes Abound for Golf Gryphons

A blend of youth and experience has the Holy Child golf team soaring through their match play schedule. The Gryphons are currently 4-2-1, and – in a testament to their balance – have had a different player step up in each contest.

Guiding the team are senior captains Morrin Carlin and Leslie Barnard, with junior Christina Bryde and sophomores Paige Kennedy, Maria Santangelo and Arianna Simone providing an extra boost of talent on the links. In addition, the team is augmented by three first-year varsity players – sophomores Mary Curtis, Kate Curis and Ava Szabatura.

Head coach Mike Duignan points to a spring break team trip to Orlando as part of the reason his team has fared so well early on. He believes it helped improve the girls’ overall golf skills and instilled confidence, but, more importantly, the coach said it’s where the Gryphons first bonded as a team.

Holy Child’s most recent success came in a rain-shortened 5-0 victory against King April 26. They pulled out a 3-2 win versus Convent of the Sacred Heart prior to that on April 21. As is his way, Duignan spread the credit from his players to the local professionals who work with the Gryphons.

“The golf pros and coaches – Barry Troiano and Monique Thoresz – at Westchester Country Club, our practice and match facility, have not only helped the girls with their swings, but have also taught them how to enjoy the game of golf as a lifelong experience,” said Duignan. “It’s a sport that teaches us many life lessons, such as playing by the rules, sportsmanship, humility, dedication and perseverance. Barry and Monique stress those attributes in every practice session.

“We are learning our lesson very well, and we are having a lot of fun along the way,” Duignan continued. “If we all played by the rules, and showed more tolerance and patience, we would be better off in our society.”
