FitzGerald Delivers Game-Winner to Lift Garnets Over Rye Neck

The cold, rainy weather was a fitting setting for the Rye softball team’s performance through five-and-a-half innings at home April 16 against Rye Neck. Garnet errors led to all three Panther runs, and opposing pitcher Jessica Calvini had shut out their bats.

Everything changed in the bottom of the sixth, however, as Rye High rallied to tie the game. Then, with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, senior captain Karly FitzGerald hit a walk-off RBI single that scored Catherine Livingston and gave the Garnets a 4-3 victory.

“That’s what she’s done ever since she was a freshman,” said head coach Alex Tejera. “She got the clutch hit.”

Rye’s fortunes began to change in the sixth when senior co-captain Samantha Lee led off the bottom of the frame with a bunt single. Amy Shanks followed with an RBI double and the team came alive. FitzGerald followed with an infield single, putting the tying run on base with no one out. A wild pitch advanced both runners, and then a throwing error allowed Shanks and FitzGerald to score and knot the score at 3-3.

Erica Becker picked up her second win for the Garnets, overcoming adversity to keep her team in the game.

“Erica worked around a few errors and three unearned runs to allow us to even have a chance at coming back,” said Tejera. “The girls all worked very hard and fought the entire game. I was very proud of them. It was a great game for both teams and it is a shame that someone has to lose that type of game.”

Nicole Maggio led Rye Neck (1-4) with two hits and an RBI. The Garnets are now 2-3, and next play Port Chester at home April 27.
