Breslin Propels Garnets to Tournament Championship

The Rye baseball team had one roller-coaster ride of a week, beginning with a heartbreaking, 6-5 walk-off loss to Fox Lane and concluding with a dominating showing in the Port Chester tournament championship April 17.

Sandwiched in the middle was a 13-0 drubbing at the hands of the same Fox Lane team that beat them 48 hours earlier with late-inning heroics. It was clear from the top of the first inning that Tax Day was not going to go their way. Blazing Fox bats, eight team errors, and an inability to move runners past second base made this a game to forget.

Forget it they did by the time Rye took the tournament opener against Port Chester 7-2. The Garnets rode sophomore pitcher Willis Robbins, who struck out 10 Rams over seven innings. It was not only his first varsity win, but the team’s first victory of the season.

Rye’s momentum carried it into the tournament championship, where they pounded Yonkers 9-1. The Garnets were again powered by pitching, as junior Forest Henderson and senior Dylan Maloney combined to silence the Bulldogs’ bats. Senior co-captain and lead-off batter Ryan Breslin was named MVP of the tournament, going 6-for-8 with a home run, a double and three RBIs. Senior Chris Fumasoli tallied five RBIs over two games and senior co-captain Paul Mundinger compiled four hits. The Garnets (2-3) also shored up their fielding, committing just one error.

“Its nice to get a couple of wins after having a couple of tough losses earlier in the week,” said head coach Mike Bruno. “Good things happen when you pitch well and play good defense.”

Rye’s next game is April 24 at Valhalla.
