Morning Round-up: Garnets Battle All the Way Back, But Eventually Fall

At home against John Jay-Cross River, the Rye boys’ lacrosse team scratched and clawed their way back from a seven-goal second half deficit to tie the game at 10-10 with one minute to go. Chris Bonaventura’s goal seemed to permanently swing the momentum in the Garnets’ direction, but JJCR broke the tie with 13 seconds to go to pull out the dramatic victory.

On the road at Fox Lane, the Rye baseball team allowed two runs in the bottom of the seventh and fell to the Foxes 6-5. The Garnets had taken the lead in the top of the inning with two runs of their own.

The doubles tandem of Erik Morque and Ryan Cavataro were the Rye boys’ tennis team’s lone victors Tuesday at home in a 6-1 loss to Byram Hills.

The Rye girls’ golf team won their first contest of the season, defeating Scarsdale by an aggregate of 264-290 at home at Rye Golf Club. Jen Lee and Alexis Hios led the way for the Garnets by shooting a respective 42 and 45.

Ryan Pennell struck out 12 batters as the Rye Neck baseball team hit the road and defeated Keio Academy 4-1. Pennell, who is Elon-bound unless he decides to go pro, allowed only two hits in an impressive performance with scouts in attendance.

On the road at Hopkins, the Rye Country Day boys’ tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision. Soma Kobayashi and Andrew Wong lost a tough fourth doubles match, 7-5, 7-5.

Despite a 9-6 halftime advantage, the Rye Country Day girls’ lacrosse team lost a 14-13 heartbreaker on the road to King. Hannah Loewentheil and Allie Farber each scored five goals for the Wildcats, and Katie Yates made 11 saves in goal.
