Morning Round-up: Spring Season Gets Rolling

The Rye Country Day boys’ lacrosse team bested Gunnery 8-4 in their season-opener Wednesday. Chris Seter was all over the field and scored five goals with one assist. The defense — led by Jack Mandy, Jake Heller, Jake Sternberg, and Hunter Massad — played great. Chandler Grinnell made 12 saves in goal.

Holy Child’s softball team slugged Fieldston into submission Wednesday, 8-3 in seven innings. Everyone played well in the season-opener, both on defense and offense. Sophomore Kathleen Samuelson pitched a stellar game striking out batter after batter. Junior Lauren Manzino had a three-run triple to put Holy Child on the board, and Chloe Giordano ripped a homer down the third base line.

The Rye Country Day girls’ lacrosse team improved to 2-0 with an impressive 11-6 victory over Portledge on the road. Hannah Loewentheil scored five more goals for a season-total of 11, and Meghan McDonough had three. Skye Aresty led in assists with four, and Katie Yates made 11 saves.

The Holy Child lacrosse team picked up where they left off last season by defeating Fieldston 9-8 at home Wednesday. The Gryphons, who had their first winning season and first playoff victory in 2009, were led by Charlotte Elcock’s four goals, one assist, and six ground balls. Marry Ferrara scored twice for Holy Child, and Rachel Vallerelli made 11 saves.

In their season debut, the Rye Country Day boys’ golf team took it to Portledge at Piping Rock, 5-1. Brian Starker, Harrison Baker, James Kennedy, TJ Sarda and Alex Friedman were all victorious for the four-time defending NYSAIS State champions.

In the first match of the season, the Rye Country Day girls’ golf team was defeated by Greenwich Academy 4-1 at Greenwich Country Club. Skye McCaine was the sole winner for RCDS. Next week the Wildcats host Holy Child Monday and travel to the Convent of the Sacred Heart Thursday.

In Tuesday’s match vs. Hackley, the Rye Country Day boys’ tennis team came away with a 6-1 victory. Singles matches were won by: Paul Fanto, Brenton Howland Sebastian Lafontant, and Zach Needle. Doubles matches by: Matthew Weissman/Tyler Tananbaum, and Nicholas Kemp/Evan Wong.

The Rye Country Day sailing team is off to a great start to the season, having won their first two regattas. The first was the MarLeague Mallory Fleet Qualifier at Stony Brook School. Andrew Mollerus (A Skipper), Teddy Mark (A Crew), Matthew Mollerus (B Skipper) and Michael (B Crew) led the Wildcats to a first place finish out of 11 teams. RCDS finished first out of nine teams at the MarNE League Invitational Team Racing Regatta. Matther Mollerus (A Skipper), Charlie Krause (A Crew), William Gleysteen (B Skipper), Andrew Mollerus (B Skipper), and Michael Ince (B Crew) led the way.

Starting pitcher Jessica Calvini powered the Rye Neck softball team to a 1-0 start with a complete game, 6-5 victory in 12 innings. She struck out 13 and hit the game-winning RBI single in the 12th.
