Paul Mundinger Named Lions Club Athlete of the Month

Paul Mundinger is a triple threat. The Rye senior is a gifted student in the classroom, generous with his time in the community and just put the finishing touches on a stellar season as captain for the ice hockey team. For his efforts in all three areas, Mundinger was selected as the Lions Club Athlete of the Month.

Along with co-captain Taka Katsuta, Mundinger led the Garnets to a 15-6-3 record and the program’s third Section championship in four years. He finished the season with 30 goals and 28 assists, and was recently tabbed All-State Honorable Mention on top of his All-Section and All-League selections. The Lions Club nod was icing on the cake.

“I am honored to receive such a well-respected award. It’s a great way to cap off a fun and exciting season and career for me,” said Mundinger. “Looking back at all the great athletes who have won this award I feel privileged to be honored among them.”

The Colgate-bound student is one of Rye High School’s finest. He’s a High Honor Roll mainstay who has won awards for Writing Distinction, AP World History, Pre-Calculus and Honors Calculus. He was the Student of the Quarter this winter and both an AP Scholar with Honor and an RHS Scholar in 2009. In addition, Mundinger won the Saint Michael’s College Book Award for Scholarship and Services in 2009.

Since 2006, the affable Mundinger has dedicated his free time to volunteer for The Food Bank for Westchester, Part of the Solution (POTS), Kids’ S.P.A.C.E., The Rye Nature Center, The Carver Center, Boys and Girls Clubs of Florida, The Empire State Games, Milton School, Rye Babe Ruth Baseball, The Jarden Westchester Triathlon and the Westchester Mariners.

Mundinger is also an outfielder for Rye’s baseball team, and was elected co-captain for the upcoming season. He plans on playing club hockey at Colgate.
