Resurrection’s Late Heroics Lead to League Championship

The Resurrection Sixth Grade Girls’ CYO team capped off an undefeated (11-0) season with a dramatic win over Ann Seton in the finals of the Westchester Putnam CYO Basketball League at Iona Prep February 28.

Back Row: Coaches Ray Martinelli and Mike Eck with Cristina Johnson, Sarah Cosmedy, Madeline Eck, Mallory Lynch, Sofia Perez-Segnini, Meghan Friedmann and Coach Jim Johnson. Front Row: Leah Kratochvil , Emilie Hassleman, Laura Martinelli, Caroline Franchella

Down one with 10 seconds to go, Resurrection’s Madeline Eck headed to the charity stripe for a one-and-one free throw opportunity. Eck – Resurrection’s offensive leader – sank the first basket to tie the game, but missed the second. The sixth grader snared her own rebound though, and scored on the second chance to give her team a 21-19 victory.

To get to the finals, Resurrection bested Holy Name-Valhalla in the quarterfinals and defeated Ursuline in the semis.
