Brendan Nagle Named Lions Club Athlete of the Month

“Captain”, “leader”, and “champion” are among the many ways to describe Brendan Nagle in his time as a Rye Garnet. Add “Lions Club Athlete of the Month” to the list. The senior was recently given the honor for the month of February.

“Winning this is the crowning achievement of my high school career,” said Nagle. “My coach stressed how special this award truly was and made me understand and embrace its significance.”

Combined with his excellence in athletics, Nagle’s ability in the classroom is what makes his resume glitter. He boasts a 93 grade point average, and was inducted into the National Honor Society in the fall. Nagle takes AP psychology and economics courses, as well as SUPA forensics.

A captain on the Rye basketball team, Nagle led his Garnets to the quarterfinals of the Class A Section tournament in February. Rye was ousted by eventual champion Tappan Zee, but the path they paved would not have been possible without their brawny man in the middle. The senior also starred for the varsity football team from 2007-09, taking part in a pair of Class B State championships in his first two years on the squad. In the fall he took over as captain and helped his team make a successful transition to Class A. Nagle was “All-Everything” in 2009, including All-State, All-League, and All-County Honorable Mention. He was also tabbed a Section 1 Class A All-Star, and led the Garnets in both tackles and sacks.

“To have been given the opportunity to play for Rye has been unbelievable,” he said. “Especially to be part of the Rye-Harrison rivalry both in basketball and football is something I will never forget. It still hasn’t hit me that I will never wear the Rye uniform again.”

Nagle is however looking forward to attending Elon University, where he will continue his football career.
