Ousted From Playoffs, Garnets Will Return Nine Players

The Rye girls’ basketball team’s season came to an end in the first round of the Section playoffs February 12, as sixth-seeded Albertus Magnus defeated the No. 11 Garnets 56-37.

Magnus, the defending Class A Section champions, put Rye (12-7) in a 30-14 hole by halftime, but allowed the visiting Garnets to creep within seven by the end of the third quarter. The perennial powerhouse Falcons put Rye away in the fourth however, jump-starting a run to the County Center for a sixth consecutive year.

“We had a great season and it’s unfortunate it had to end so soon,” said Karly FitzGerald, a captain and the team’s only senior. “We came out scared against Magnus and although we picked it up and closed the gap in the second half, it wasn’t enough for us to win. We had an extremely talented team that bonded and only continued to improve throughout the season. We have an incredible year to look back on and cannot be disappointed. Next year this team will be amazing to watch.

Catharine Greer and Lillian McCabe stood out for the Garnets this season. McCabe led the team with an average of 17.2 points per game and Greer scored at a 13.4 clip.

“We’ll really miss Karly, who was such a great leader, but our hopes for next year are very high,” said McCabe. “We’re keeping our eyes on the County Center. It’s been my goal to play there since I was in 8th grade, and I think everyone else shares that desire.”

Head coach Mary Henwood agrees that the future is bright for Rye. With nine of this year’s 10 players returning, the Garnets have an opportunity to build on what they’ve begun. Henwood also had kind parting words for her lone departing senior.

“She has been a great leader and captain for the us,” said the coach. “Karly is a fighter, a true competitor, and a real pleasure to coach. She has always possessed a team-first attitude and never failed to take care of her teammates. Karly is a class act who will be missed dearly next season.”
