Morning Round-up: Hughes, Lyons Qualify for States in Two Events

In addition to qualifying for Wednesday’s Section 1 swimming finals, Rye High School‘s Chris Lyons and Kevin Hughes punched their tickets to the State championships in a combined four events Monday at Felix Festa Middle School in West Nyack. Hughes placed second in the 200-meter freestyle and third in the 500-meter freestyle — hitting the State qualifying time in each — and Lyons was second in the 200 IM and fourth in the 100 breaststroke. The State finals take place at the end of the month in Buffalo. The top 16 in each of Monday’s individual swimming events advanced to the Section finals Wednesday. Ben Rubenstein finished eighth in the 100 butterfly and sixth in the 100 breaststroke, while Raoul Rodriguez placed thirteenth in the 500 freestyle.

On the rink at the Playland Ice Casino, the Rye boys’ hockey team defeated Fox Lane 4-1. The victory improved the Garnets’ record to 11-3-3 overall, and kept them unbeaten in the 2010 calendar year at 6-0-3. Taka Katsuta scored twice for Rye, and Robert Holmes and Brian Powers each added another.

Rye’s boys’ 4×800 team of Mac Gager, Matt Kao, Max Robinson, and Mason Curtis set a new indoor school record in the event Monday in the Varsity Classic at the New Balance Track and Field Center in NYC. They finished fourth overall with a time of 8:10.4.
