School Records Fall at County Championships

It was a successful Sunday for Rye’s indoor track teams January 31 at the Ft. Washington Armory for the Westchester County Championships.

Tori Virtue placed first in the Class B girls’ high jump with a leap of 4’ 9”, and Audrey Love took second in the triple jump with a mark of 32’ 3”. The girls’ 4×800-meter relay team – Ellie Friedman, Audrey Love, Jordan Delane and Lizzy Bennett – finished second among Class B teams and toppled Rye’s 15-year-old freshmen/sophomore record for the event by finishing in 10:30.70. Morgan Kirby, Virtue, Rita Futamura and Maddy Kinker also broke a longstanding Rye freshmen/sophomore record by completing the 4×200-meter relay in 1:56.98.

On the boys’ side, Mac Gager tied a 24-year-old school record in the 600-meter run by hitting the finish line in 1:24.60. His time was good enough for first in Class B, and second overall. Matt Kao and Mason Curtis finished the 1,000-meter run in back-to-back fashion by taking fourth (2:41.20) and fifth (2:42.20) overall. In the 4×800-meter relay, Kao, Gager, Curtis and Max Robinson teamed to finish fourth overall in 8:20.60.

Both teams will now shift their focus to the Class B championship on Valentine’s Day.
