School of the Holy Child’s indoor track team sent four members to the renowned Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden January 29. Head coach Declan Foley wrote the following recap of the Athletic Association of Independent Schools 4×400-meter relay race.
The foursome of Rachel O’Driscoll, Isabelle Despins, Brianna McLoughlin and Katelyn Racanelli put forth a great effort at MSG and showed why SHC runs with a “never-give-up” attitude.
Rachel led off our relay, battling with the other five teams for position upfront. The race went out fast, and she was on the inside in second place midway through her leg. On the final lap Fieldston started pulling away. Rachel handed off to Isabelle, who proceeded to run a personal-best 400 meters as she took the team from fifth to third place, behind Fieldston and Sacred Heart. Brianna took over next, getting out fast and running a solid third leg as she kept us in medal contention. Upfront it appeared to be a battle between Fieldston and Sacred Heart as they had the rest of the field beaten by about four to five seconds.
Katelyn took the baton at the anchor position and over the next 400 meters showed everyone why she is one of the fastest runners in New York State. She flew around the track and began to close the 40-meter gap. Fieldston would hang on for the victory, but with incredible effort Katelyn came out of the last turn and passed Sacred Heart with less than ten meters to go. The team earned a silver medal, and set a new school record of 4:22.60.
