Rye’s wrestling team avenged a December loss to Byram Hills by edging the Bobcats 48-36 at home January 5.
“I’m very happy with today’s outcome,” said head coach Matt Beckley. “I’m thrilled that we were able to turn it around against them. We never like to lose, but being able to topple a team that recently beat you makes you feel a lot better about the initial loss. The boys have been working hard and it showed today.”
Beckley said he was especially pleased by some of the younger wrestlers’ performances, which included a Connor McWilton pin victory, and Jake Concavage’s stunning upset of Byram’s captain in the second round. The coach was also proud of Russell Hansen’s showing.
“He has been the biggest surprise,” said the coach. “Russell joined the team three-quarters through the season last year as a freshman and made varsity this year. He does not have much match experience, but he was thrown into the varsity lineup and so far has a winning percentage.”
Leading the way for the 5-6 Garnets have been captains Graham Zahringer, who is 13-0, Donovan McSorley (11-2) and Peter Kennedy, with Jesse Trumm also doing yeoman’s work in the lineup. Beckley and his team are now entering the heart of the season, with several matches ortournaments a week for the duration of the season. Up next is a January 12 match with cross-town rival Rye Country Day.
“This was a good win today,” said McSorley. “Hopefully it gets us started and is just one of many victories to come.”
