Morning Round-up: Garnets Fall in Rye Rotary Final

The Rye girls’ basketball team made it to the finals of their own Rye Rotary tournament December 19, but fell to Irvington 67-49. Catharine Greer was the leading scorer on both teams with 25 points. Against Preston the day before, the Garnets were 57-31 victors. Lillian McCabe paced the team with 29 points, Greer chipped in 12, and senior captain Karly Fitzgerald recorded six steals.

After falling 71-62 to Lakeland in the first round of the Walter Panas tournament, the Rye boys’ basketball team dropped a 53-52 decision to host Panas in the consolation game. The Garnets had a chance to win the game, but a last-second attempt rimmed out. Chris Twyman scored 23 in the heartbreaking loss. Brian Pickup led Rye the day before with 19.

The offensive-minded pair of Elizabeth Wulf and Kayti Faustini combined for six goals — each scored a hat trick — as the Rye Country Day girls’ hockey team bested visiting Princeton 7-0. Freshman sensation Wulf reached 50 goals for her career, and continues to add to her all-time scoring record at the school. Fellow freshman Nicole Grosser saved 27 in goal.

On Friday at Rye Country Day School, the boys’ basketball team defeated Hopkins 62-56. Jason Rogers scored 27, and Darren Douglas tossed in 13.

Jeffrey Horowitz scored all four of his goals in the third period of Rye Country Day‘s 5-4 win over Pingree in the second round of the Pingree tournament. The Wildcats erased a 4-1 defecit in the victory. Jack Carroll played goalie in relief of Omeed Alidadi, and stopped all 12 third period shots he faced.
