Garnets Pick Up Where They Left Off

Brian Pickup and the Rye boys’ basketball team kicked open the 2009-10 season’s door by winning the Lions Club-sponsored Cliff Clinton Classic at home last weekend. The Garnets defeated Sacred Heart of Yonkers 65-55 in the opening round December 11, and then claimed the tournament championship with a 49-46 victory over local rival Blind Brook December 12.

Pickup was named tournament MVP after recording a double-double in the title game. The junior captain scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against the Trojans. He chipped in 15 the day before. Whether it’s driving to the hoop, crashing the boards, finding the open man, or creating space for a long-range jumper, Pickup is the rare talent who can do anything on the court. It’s scary – for the opposition – to think he’s just past the halfway point of his RHS basketball career.

Conor Smith paced Rye in the season opener, pouring through 28 points in the win. Four days later, in a 53-36 road loss to Pleasantville, the ever-improving junior scored 10 points and snared 11 rebounds. The Garnets cut the lead to 34-31 late in the third after senior captain Brendan Nagle put back an offensive rebound, but the Panthers shot ahead with a 14-0 run and never looked back. It was not one of Rye’s best performances – they allowed Pleasantville multiple second and third chances, and repeatedly turned the ball over.

Up next for the 2-1 Garnets is a tournament this weekend in northern Westchester at Walter Panas High School.
