Morning Round-up: Henwood Reaches Milestone 300th Victory

Rye girls’ basketball head coach Mary Henwood earned her 300th career victory Saturday when her Garnets defeated White Plains 48-45 in the championship game of the Dr. Lynne Kahn Holiday Classic. Catharine Greer scored 22 points in the finale and was named tournament MVP. The junior guard also scored 16 in Rye’s 63-39 victory over Ramapo in the opening round of the tourney. Lillian McCabe paced Rye in that contest with 23 points and six assists. At Rye High in the Cliff Clinton Tournament, the RHS boys’ basketball team hoisted the championship with a 49-46 win over Blind Brook. Brian Pickup was named MVP after recording a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Garnets defeated Sacred Heart 65-55 in the opening round. Pickup scored 15 in that game, but Conor Smith led with 28 points in Rye’s season-opener. The Rye Neck boys’ basketball team, led by former RHS assistant John Aguilar, lost twice in the tournament. The Panthers fell to Blind Brook 73-53, and then Sacred Heart by a score of 54-39.

On Friday in Brewster, the Rye hockey team opened their season with a dominant showing. They defeated Somers 7-1.

The Rye Neck girls’ basketball team dropped a pair of games in the Hastings tournament. Vanessa Laise scored 12 points in the consolation game, but Hastings won 39-33. Carla Elias Nava led with 20 points and 11 rebounds in an opening round 45-37 loss to Fox Lane.

Darren Douglas scored 15 points, and Jason Rogers recorded a double-double in Rye Country Day‘s 50-33 win in the championship game of their own John Sabia tournament. The Wildcats bested Trinity Pawling 50-33, thanks in part to tourney MVP Jason Rogers and his 11 points and 10 boards. The boys’ basketball team took out Greens Farms Academy in the first round, 56-37.

The Rye Country Day girls’ basketball team also was victorious in the John Sabia Tournament. The Wildcats topped Trinity 52-30 in the finals Saturday. As per usual, Alexandra Osborn-Jones led the way with 27 points and eight rebounds.

The Rye Country Day girls’ hockey team got their first wins of the season en route to victory in the Christopher Reeve Holiday Tournament at Princeton, N.J. The Wildcats throttled host Princeton in the first round, 9-0. Kayti Faustini and Elizabeth Wulf each scored four goals in that victory. In the championship game, Wulf scored another three goals and added an assist as RCDS toppled Lansdale Catholic 4-0.

At home Saturday, the Rye Country Day boys’ hockey team dropped a 5-4 decision to Portsmouth Abbey. Jeff Horowitz led RCDS with three goals and an assist.
