Morning Round-up: Rye Teams Soaring Early

Four of five Rye teams pulled off victories Thursday evening, with the RHS boys’ swim and dive team leading the way with a tight, 89-87 win against local rival Harrison at Hommocks Middle School. Chris Lyons placed first in both the 200 IM and 100 backstroke, and Ben Rubenstein won the 100 breaststroke event.

The Rye Country Day girls’ basketball team cruised to a 44-18 victory at home against Marymount. Senior captain Alexandra Osborn-Jones recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and freshman sharpshooter Carolyn Binder led the Wildcats in scoring with 16. Stephanie Binder had an impressive debut for the team with 10 points and five assists.

Holy Child’s basketball team quickly answered any questions about their mettle after graduating all-everything Sophia Aleksandravicius. The Gryphons throttled Hastings 55-29 in the first round of the Westlake Tournament. They were paced by an all-around performance from Stephanie Taylor, who scored 11 points, snared nine rebounds, dished fours assists, and blocked four shots. She was assisted by Katie Hughes and Shannon O’Conner, who each scored 14 in the win.

Like the boys’ side a day before, the RCDS girls’ squash team got off to a dazzling start by besting Greens Farms Academy 7-0 at home. Hadley Chu led the way in the sweep by earning a 3-1 victory in the No. 1 spot.

The Rye Neck boys’ basketball team was the only one to falter yesterday, but it certainly wasn’t for a lack of trying. They fell to Dobbs Ferry 59-52.
