Morning Round-up: Six of seven Rye teams advance

Aside from the Rye football team’s gut-wrenching loss (see story in previous post), it was a wildly successful weekend for Rye and Rye Neck in the Section playoffs.

Although the score was tied 0-0 in the first half, the first-seeded Rye girls’ soccer team imposed their will in the second and defeated Sleepy Hollow 4-0 October 31. Carter Talgo and Lia Bellizzi combined for four goals and two assists. The Garnets are unbeaten in 23 games dating back to last season, and will next host No. 8 Tappan Zee in the Section A quarterfinals Tuesday.

The fourth-seeded Rye boys’ soccer team also posted a 4-0 victory October 30 in their Class A first round game. They defeated No. 13 Yonkers 4-0 with goals from Chris Livingston, Buck Reynolds, Juan Chang, and Arber Xhema. Rye will face No. 5 Eastchester at home Tuesday in the Class A quarterfinals.

Rye’s second-seeded field hockey team advanced to the Class B semifinals with a thorough 7-1 defeat of No. 10 Walter Panas October 30. Torie Stearns and Emma Brinkman each recorded hat tricks for the surging Garnets. Up next is No. 3 Briarcliff at home Tuesday.

The Rye volleyball team posted a 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-16) win October 30 in the Class B quarterfinals as the No. 9 seed upsetting No. 8 Edgemont on the road. Rebecca Choron hammed the Panthers with 19 kills. The Garnets hit the road Tuesday for a duel with No. 1 Hen Hud.

Rye Neck got in on the winning action Friday as well. The boys’ soccer team, seeded No. 6, sent No. 11 Kennedy packing with a 2-1 victory. Ivan Martinez and Alex Baretto scored for the Panthers, who will host No. 14 Pleasantville (they upended No. 3 Dobbs Ferry) Tuesday in the Class B quarterfinals.

The Rye Neck girls’ soccer team also won their Class B first round game with Kennedy 2-1. They erased a 1-0 halftime deficit and upset No. 7 JFK on the road. Up next is a duel at No. 2 Bronxville Tuesday.

Holy Child raced at the Westchester County Championships at Somers on Saturday. Senior Rachel O’Driscoll had an outstanding performance over a muddy and hilly course, completing the 5k in 19:47 to come in fourth overall. The Varsity team placed 17th out of 28. Ellen Lautenbach and Amanda Carlson both medaled in the Freshman championship race, placing 11th and 24th respectively.  HC is winding up their season with a final league meet Wednesday at Waveny Park in New Canaan, followed by the NYSAIS Championships Sunday at Van Cortlandt, and the FAA League Championships on Monday 11/9 at Waveny Park.

Rye’s Coco Darelius placed third in the girls’ Section 1 diving championships Friday at Pace. She scored a 355.15 in representing the Garnet. She was nine points shy of second place, and 32 of first place finisher Candace Young, who qualified for States.

In other action, the Rye Country Day boys’ soccer team beat Salisbury at home 1-0, but the football team lost to King 34-14.
