Morning Round-up: Garnets top Huskies again

Rye’s football team stormed Feeley Field Saturday, and defeated Harrison 21-7 in the 79th installment of The Game. The win was the Garnets’ seventh consecutive against the arch rival Huskies, and earned them a berth in the Class A Section playoffs. They’ll play Nyack at home Friday, October 23, at 7 p.m.

Senior Cole McCormack rushed for over 150 yards and scored all three touchdowns for Rye. Instead of taking credit, the humble captain showered his offensive lineman with high praise. Check back here — and in the October 23 edition of The Rye Record — later for the full story on Saturday’s big win.

On the gridiron at Blind Brook, Rye Neck pulled out an exciting 21-13 victory. Matt Pinto, who rushed for over 100 yards, scored the second of his two touchdowns on a 12-yard dash to put the Black Hats ahead with just one minute left in the game.

Despite a superlative performance from Brian Glazewski, Rye Country Day’s football team dropped a 28-10 decision to visiting rival Brunswick. The senior captain ran for nearly 150 yards on 18 totes, and also threw for 42 yards and a touchdown.

The Rye Country Day girls’ soccer team roared back in the second half to tie Greenwich Academy 1-1.  Greenwich came into the game 8-1 and undefeated in FAA play. GA scored 27 minutes into the game, but the Wildcats answered on a goal right in front of the net by Sammy Friedwald off an assist by Delaine Powerful 22 minutes into the second. Both teams had good scoring opportunities as RCDS keeper Kayti Faustini had six saves and GA keeper Katherine Goldsmith had nine. The Wildcats travel to rival Hackley on Tuesday.

In their homecoming game, Rye Country Day’s field hockey team bested visiting Horace Greeley 2-0. Isabel Beshar scored both goals for the Wildcats, and was assisted by Amanda Shulman and Nealy Nimocks. Kate Moelis made two saves in 40 minutes of action for RCDS, and then Janelle McDermouth (0 saves) and Sammy Coughlin (2 saves) took over.

Rye Neck’s field hockey team dropped a 1-0 decision to Somers on the road. Elena Hurlbut stopped two shots for the Panthers.

Holy Child’s soccer team earned their fifth win of the year in a hard-fought 1-0 victory at home against Brearly. Charlotte Elcock scored on an assist from Charlotte Knobloch, and Molly Schauber made three saves for the shutout.

Holy Child’s field hockey team was also victorious; they defeated Chapin at home 2-0. Liz McCooey, playing in her first varsity game, and Molly Fitzwilliam scored for the Gryphons on beautiful assists from Katie Amodio. Carrigan Henderson and Bridget Cooney needed to make just one combined save for the shutout.
