Morning Round-up: Rye soccer upends Byram Hills

In a driving, frigid rain, the Rye boys’ soccer team got the monkey off of their back by defeating Byram Hills 1-0 in overtime at Nugent Stadium. Senior captain Juan Chang scored the game-winner on a 30-yard cracker five minutes into the extra session. Arber Xhema had the assist.

“That was indescribable,” said Chang moments after Rye’s victory. “We’ve lost to this team for all four years I’ve been here — they were the one team left I wanted to beat. I got the ball in an open space and there was no other option but to shoot it.”

Senior goalkeeper Mike Linehan made seven saves for the Garnets, and was helped tremendously by senior captain Tim Lonergan and the rest of the lockdown defense. Rye celebrated joyously after Chang’s goal, and junior forward Buck Reynolds best described the situation as “pandemonium”. For more on this incredible game, check back here later today and in the October 23 edition of The Rye Record.

The Rye Neck boys’ soccer team lost a tough 2-1 contest at home to Westlake. Adam Guttierez scored for the Panthers, and Dalton Mendez made five saves.

At home on senior night, Rye’s volleyball team beat rival Harrison 3-1 (25-10, 25-21, 16-25, 25-17). Rebecca Choron led with 12 kills and 11 digs, and Alda Pontes backed her up with nine gills and 13 digs.

Rye Neck’s volleyball team was also victorious; they defeated visiting Pleasantville 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-14).
