Rye crew team raises nearly $10,000

The Rye Crew team held their first Erg-a-thon October 3, in the Rye Middle School parking lot.

“It was a lot of fun,” said senior captain Keith Hanson. “It was really successful and was great that so many people in the community were able to enthusiastically support the team.”

Ergs are rowing machines, and thanks to the Teitler and Gavlik families, the team was able to transport 10 ergs from the Greenwich Water Club and set them up in front of the school. The crew team’s goal was to erg at least 200,000 meters, which seemed to be around 10,000 meters per teammember. By the end of the event, the team had rowed way past the original goal to a stunning 280,538 meters. Looks like they will have to raise the bar for next year!

It was great entertainment for community members as well; Rye citizens of all ages were learning to erg on the machines and buying delicious baked goods thanks to the amazing bakesale coordinated by Jody Lee, which, along with onsite pledges, ended up making over $1042.00. There were also fabulous T-shirts for sale thanks to Susanna Cronin.

“I was very impressed with the team’s effort and a huge thank you to all of our generous supporters,” said team coach Stan Nelson.

Special thanks also go out to Helena Jonassen for organizing the entire event, which was a huge commitment, Rita Wong and Judy Croughan for advertising, and the Neuringers for coordinating schedules. The team raised a grand total of $9,450.72, with more pledges coming in by the day. The rowers achieved a great deal and were extremely impressed with their fundraising, as the event raised much more than anyone expected. The money will go toward many different expenses seeing as the Crew program is not funded by the school.

“I love Rye Crew,” said junior coxswain Kristen Duarte, “As a team, we always have a lot of fun together and it is great that family events like this can get the word out about the sport.”

If you have any interest in coming to a regatta to watch the team race, talk to any of the 29 team members or their families and get a regatta schedule; the team is approaching what they hope to be a fabulous season.
