Garnets sweep Rye Neck in border battle

With two-thirds of Rye’s volleyball team composed of seniors, it’s easy to believe co-captain Rebecca Choron when she says her Garnet teammates “feel like an extended family”. The cohesiveness shone through at home September 17, against their rivals from down the road. Rye dispatched Rye Neck 3-0, with 25-19, 25-18, and 25-23 victories.

The Panthers nearly took command of the third game until RHS head coach Tim Tolve called a timeout. The tactic worked as the Garnets closed out the game and match.

“We didn’t play our best match of the year, but we were able to come out with a win against a tough Rye Neck team,” said the coach.

Senior Alexis Ehrlich led with eight aces and 10 digs, and senior co-captain Samantha Lee had five aces and 20 assists. Molly Smalt, also a senior, had eight aces.

”I almost didn’t play because my knee was bothering me, but my teammates encouraged me to give it a try and I’m glad I did,” said Smalt, who missed most of the 2008 season with a torn ACL. “Many of us have been together for four years so we communicate so well on the court. That is the key to our success. I hope we continue to play well for the rest of the season.”

Rye improved to 3-1 with the win. Their next game is September 25, at Fox Lane.
