Monday is Funday for local Field Hockey teams

All three Rye field hockey teams in action September 14 came away with victories.

I was able to attend Rye High School’s game at Pleasantville, and witnessed a gritty performance as the Garnets picked up their first win of the young season by a 2-0 margin. They may not have been as sharp a team as you’ll see in a month, but Emily Fitzgerald’s squad was relentless in their attack of the Panthers’ goal. Rye controlled possession throughout, and eventually broke through with goals from Mallory Little and Torie Stearns. With the win, the Garnets improved to 1-1-1. Up next for the Garnets is Briarcliff today, at 4:30 p.m.

Rye Neck also picked up their first win of the season by squeaking out a 2-1 victory over Somers at home. The Panthers (1-1) were led by junior captain Emily Morningstar, who had one goal and one assist. Their next game is September 17 at Briarcliff.

In their first contest of the year, Holy Child — the reigning NYSAIS State champions — bested Brearley 4-0 at home. Four different Gryphons scored in the win. “Overall it was a good start to our season,” said head coach Barbara Lorys.  “We have a young team and the girls need to be a little more confident. Today’s victory should help us out in that department.”

Holy Child’s next contest is September 17, at home versus archrival Rye Country Day. The two schools have met in the NYSAIS State final for three consecutive years, with the Gryphons winning the first and last meetings. Game time is set for 4:30.
